A civil society group under the aegis of Save Lagos Group (SLG) has
written a strong worded letter to the Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwumi
Ambode over the bad state of the roads in the metropolis of the State
which made the citizens of the State to be encountering horrible
experienced to reach their various destinations on daily basis, calling
on the State government for immediate action on the reconstruction of
the roads across the length and breadth of the State because of the
commercial nature of the State.
The group also condemned the shady jobs of the contractors handling
the ongoing road projects in some part of the State, condemning the
neglect of some areas of the State by the State government in the
uplifitment of her infrastructures, particularly, the Ikorodu
Communities where Governor Ambode claimed as his constituency during the
2015 governorship election, complaining about the negligent attitude of
some officials of the State government in handling of the ongoing road
and other projects across the State presently.
According to the letter dated Monday 24th of October, 2016 with the
titled “The urgent need of Igbogbo, Awesu, Orire-Abosan, Offin, Oreta,
Baiyeku, Ebute, Adamo and Araromi communities of Ikorodu Town-A call for
immediate Action” and signed by Convener of the group, Comrade Adeniyi,
Alimi Sulaiman and forwarded to Governor Akinwumi Ambode, which a copy
was made available to newsmen on Thursday, lamented the sorry state of
the roads in the various communities of the State, noting that the
aforementioned Ikorudu Communities lacked the physical presence of the
state government in terms of social amenities like good roads, portable
pipe borne water and so on.
The letter reads thus; “It is noteworthy to call your attention to
the imperative need of the people of Igbogbo, Awesu, Orere-Abosan,
Offin, Oreta, Baiyeku, Ebute, Adamo and Araromi communities, all under
Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA, Ikorodu North Local Government. These
aforementioned communities, base on our environmental research into the
amenities lacking, they are lacking good roads! It was discovered that,
all the access roads to the aforementioned communities are nothing to
write home about.
“Your Excellency Sir, it was a nasty experience on the day a research
work brought us to these aforementioned communities. We spent almost
three(3) to four(4) hours before our Car could be brought out from the
devilish red latrine/dragon pity that now become a death trap/vehicle
damager, that is dangerous to plough and it was almost throw our car
off-balance, due to the slippery nature of the road”.
Meanwhile, while responding to the group’s letter, the State
government through its Chief of Staff to the State Governor, in a letter
dated 7th November, 2016 and signed by one Kola Aileru on his behalf,
acknowledged the receipt of the said letter and the letter has been
forwarded to the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Works and
Infrastructure on the directive of the Governor Ambode for further
necessary action on the subject matter.
Similarly, to affirm the government response, visitation to the
aforementioned roads by the members of the Save Lagos Group recently,
the presence of the State government had been seen on some of the roads
as the Public Works Corporation officials have been dragged to the site
of the projects in the areas.
While commending the prompt action of the State government on the
aforementioned roads, the group urged Governor Ambode to ensure that the
quality of jobs were done on the public roads in the interest of the
mass of our people that plying the roads.
